Course Description:

CS755 covers current and emerging issues in advanced computer networks, protocols and applications.   Although the class consists mostly of lectures delivered by Dr. Simon, the spirit of the class is that of a seminar, and active class participation is expected. We focus on three major issues:

• Packet and cell switched network technologies for the emerging next generation of the Internet
  
• Mobile, wireless and ad hoc networking
• Sensor networking

Prerequisites:

• CS 656.  
• Notice that the prereqs for CS 656 include the CS 571 and STAT 344, which I will assume that you already have

Required textbook and readings:

• William Stallings, High-Speed Networks Networks and Internets: Performance and Quality of Service  Prentice Hall. 
• There will be papers placed on line that are used to supplement the material on wired networks, and to provide the reading material for mobile and wireless networks

Project

Project details will be presented during the second lecture.  The project will involve designing and programming one of several possible network algorithms. 

Grading 

• Class participation 15%
• In-class final 35% (open book)
• Projects 50%

Examination Rules:

The GMU honor code and the CS honor code applies.  Further, no early exams will be offered.   If you must miss an exam then you must provide a written, verifiable excuse. No makeup exams will be offered until your excuse is verified.
