Setting Up VPN

VPN

Many GMU machines are behind a firewall, making them inaccessible to computers off-campus. VPN is a mechanism for an off-campus computer of yours to be able to connect to these ordinarily inaccessible computers. What VPN does is establish an encrypted network connection between your computer and a special gateway computer on campus. With the assistance of the gateway computer, your computer can then send network data to any computer on campus through this connection.

To set up VPN, you need to have a VPN client software installed on your computer. GMU is presently using OpenVPN, for which there are free and open source packages for Linux, MacOS X, and Windows.

To set up your computer with the appropriate software, follow the instructions found on ITE's VPN website.
