Rogue Programs and other Computer Related Crime
- VIRUS - needs to attach itself to a "host" program to replicate.
A time bomb is one type of virus (e.g. Michaelangelo).
New virus: FunLove
- WORM - self-replicating. Takes over the computer's resources.
(Internet Worm, Robert Morris, Jr.) New Worm: Bubbleboy
- TROJAN HORSE - pretends to be good, while doing something bad.
- Compromised accounts - Dumpster Diving and Sniffers
- Denial of Service - normal service is interrupted or a single user
monopolizes the resource.
Security Measures
- Backups (at least 2 copies, in 2 places, in 2 media)
- Passwords (use a combination of at least 7-8 characters and digits)
- Restrict Access (guards, card keys, dongles, modem call back,
biometrics)
- Anti-viral software
- Encryption: PGP (pretty good privacy), RSA Rivest, Shamir, Adleman,
SSL (Secure Socket Layer https://...), AES (Advanced Encryption Standard)
- Firewalls
