I2C Resistor Bundle

The Gumstix and the Brainstem communicate via I2C, which requires a resistor bundle to convert voltage from 5V to 3.3V. Also, this housing holds the power, signal and ground connections from the Gumstix.

I2C on the Gumstix

On the Gumstix Waysmall board, I2C is accessed via the GPIO pins on the bottom of the board. All the wires are surface soldered to the pins. The two green wires are signal, and the black wire is ground. See the Gumstix Modifications section for more details.

I2C on the Gumstix

The Gumstix is powered from the Brainstem's I2C pins. The power wire connects to the top of the power connector on the Waysmall board. See the Gumstix Modifications section for more details.

Waysmall

To run the wires for I2C the case for the Waysmall needs to be modified. Using an X-acto knife, cut the portion of the case in front of the GPIO pins.

Complete Waysmall Assembly

This shows the completed Waysmall assembly. We used a Palm Macintosh Serial Adapter Cable and a serial ribbon cable to connect the CMUCam to the Gumstix's ttyS1 port.

Almost Done

The Gumstix Waysmall is attached using 3M Dual Lock. Make sure to position the Gumstix such that it does not overhang the edge of the upper deck, otherwise it might get snagged. This is a tight fit and takes some tweaking. The Palm serial cable is attached to the Waysmall with standard velcro, and is bent over to hold it in place. A wire tie is helpful here.
