Mitchell Potter is a computer scientist with the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.  His research is focused on the design, analysis, and application of computational models of evolution.  Most recently, he has been investigating the evolution of cooperative behaviors for multiagent teams of autonomous robots that can adapt to the changing makeup and capability of the team.  This includes research involving the use of artificial physics models to represent swarm behaviors for heterogeneous teams of robots having different roles and capabilities.
Dr. Potter received a B.A. in Mathematics from Florida State University in 1978, an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985, and a Ph.D. in the area of evolutionary computation from George Mason University in 1997. Prior work includes the development of knowledge engineering tools at Sperry and Contel (1985-1991), and systems software development at Texas Instruments (1978-1985) where he was a member of the Explorer Lisp Machine development team.
