SWE 432 Homework 4
Fall 2009
Web Site Design : Due October 1

For this exercise I want you to do a comparison between a really well done site and a (well used but) poorly done site. (That is, for the poor site, don't pick a site that nobody uses.)

Pick two sites with similar functions - two search sites, two news sites, or two shopping sites, etc.

Using the same criteria for web site usability to evaluate each site. For criteria see Nielson, Chapter 3: Revisting Early Web Usability Findings. Note that this material was covered in lecture on September 10. You should focus on the "Eight Problems That Haven't Changed." You should also consider the remaining 26 usability problems in this chapter, as appropriate. Clearly, the bad site is unlikely to do everything badly. Conversely, the good site is unlikely to do everything well. So, don't expect the good site to be perfect, and vice versa. As for which criteria to use, just choose the ones that are relevant for your chosen type of site.

For this project, you are permitted to work individually, or in groups of two (2). I am not looking for a lot of length here - something comparable to previous usability assignment is fine.

Submit your report by making a link to it on your (password-protected) class web page. This should be the URL that you gave us in the information form! Very important: if you are going to use a different URL, submit an update to the information form.

Grading will be on
