Grants

  • Project Name: Archiving the Ethiopian Web
    • Duration: 10 Months

    • Funding Organization: Ethiopian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology

    • Amount: 94,000 (ETB) (~10,000USD)

    • Role: Principal Investigator (PI)

    • Description: Considering the high importance of the Web data and due to the dynamic nature of the Web, several countries are creating their own national archives to ensure the preservation of Web contents of historical relevance to their cultures. National libraries and national archiving agencies are incorporating web archiving as a part of their effort to preserve the cultural, political, and social heritage of a society. The goal of this project is to study, design and test a Web Archival System for Ethiopian documents on the Web. By Ethiopian content we mean by documents that are written in one of Ethiopian local languages (such as Amharic, Oromiffa, etc) or pages that are about the social, cultural and political issues of the country Ethiopia.

  • Project Name: Deployment of Amharic Search Engine
    • Duration: 12 Months

    • Funding Organization: Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Technology

    • Amount: 131,000 (ETB) (~15,000USD)

    • Role: Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)

    • Description: the purpose of this project is to implement web scale search engine for Amharic Web pages that incorporates the typical features of the language. The project will be designed and implemented to give an interface that accepts queries in Amharic, retrieve documents that are relevant to the user queries from the index database that will be developed with the help of the crawler, and present the result in appropriate format to the user by applying the necessary similarity and ranking technique.
