The department has over 40 faculty members with wide-ranging research interests including artificial intelligence, algorithms, computational biology, computer graphics, computer vision, cryptography, databases, data mining, parallel and distributed systems, real-time systems, robotics, security, software engineering, and wireless and mobile computing.

The department's faculty include 11 recipients of NSF’s prestigious CAREER awards, two ACM fellows and three IEEE fellows. Research expenditures exceed $6M annually. In the latest NSF rankings for university research expenditures in Computer Sciences, Mason is ranked 38th nationwide.
