Abstract

Design Research investigates phenomena associated with designing so as to develop knowledge with which to inform and improve research, education and practice of design. Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is has a strong focus on design research, its areas spanning from design theory and methodology, design synthesis and creativity, human factors, aesthetics, safety, sustainability, design for manufacturing, digital human modelling, product informatics, geometric modelling, CAD/CAE, Robotics, and so on. IISc has been recently awarded a Indo-US Joint Center of Excellence (CoE) in Design of Sustainable Products, Services and Manufacturing Systems, with partners from Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), National Innovation Foundation India (NIF), University of California Berkeley, Syracuse University and Washington State University. The talk will outline some of the research from IISc into design, and the main objectives and deliverables of the CoE.
