The Department of Computer Science has 21 teaching-track faculty and 57 tenured and tenure-track faculty with wide-ranging research interests, and strong research groups in cybersecurity, cryptography, systems and networks, machine learning and data mining, artificial intelligence, robotics, computer vision, natural language processing, theory, databases, bioinformatics, computer graphics, HCI, and software engineering. The department has seen a substantial increase in computer science majors as enrollment has grown from 550 undergraduates in 2012 to over 2,200 today. The department has nearly 200 PhD students and over 950 Masters students enrolled in four MS programs. The Department has around $5 million in annual research expenditures, 20 recipients of the prestigious NSF CAREER Award, four IEEE Fellows, and three ACM Fellows. GMU is R1. The department is currently ranked 36th on CSRankings.
