ABSTRACT

Recently, there has been an enormous interest in Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and a large deployment of IoT systems has begun. The ubiquity of IoT devices makes them an interface that connects the physical world with the cyber world. Barriers, however, still remain to realize the cyber-IoT-physical system. On one hand, due to hardware constraints, IoT devices only have limited capability to sense the subtle motions in the physical world. On the other hand, there exist significant challenges in each network layer for IoT devices to deliver their data to the cyber world where computation and intelligence happens. In this talk, I will describe how we build a cyber-IoT-physical system with a software-hardware codesign. In particular, I will present our solution that fundamentally improves the sensing capability of existing IoT infrastructure, which enables new sensing applications and directly boosting the performance of all existing IoT-based sensing systems. I will also present our cross-layer solutions that build high throughput and low latency connectivity between the IoT devices and the cyber world. I will conclude my talk with future directions in IoT and 5G networks.
